Building Authority with Video

Today, there is no faster way to build credibility as an authority in your field than with video. I know this is true because I’ve lived it.

In 2014 I set out to create an online video series sharing the knowledge and experience I had gained while trying to acquire my own remote controlled aircraft (drone) for capturing aerial images.

I uploaded the video series to the online course community Udemy and it immediately gained the attention of thousands of other people interested in doing the same thing. Within a week I had enrolled a few thousand students and raised enough money to offset the cost of creating the course.

More importantly, I quickly became an “expert” in the field of aerial photography/videography in the eyes of my students. As my audience and student enrollment grew, several opportunities opened up to me that I never would have otherwise had. I received job offers, workshop requests, and have had several universities reach out requesting that I help develop their drone training programs. I even met up with one of my students while visiting Korea and created a quick aerial video of the school where he teaches.

Teaching is powerful. Sharing information through online video is even more powerful because you can record it once, and share it thousands or even millions of times.

If you are a business owner, you may be wondering how you can use video to build authority in your niche. It’s really easy, and you’d be surprised how effective it can be in building trust with your potential customers.

Here’s a great example. The company Premium Beat sells stock music to video producers. They maintain an excellent blog with great tutorial information (including videos) that they know their target market will be interested in. Whoever is producing this content has done a great job of establishing Premium Beat as an expert in the production world. I trust their opinion and I’m more likely to keep coming back to their website and license their stock music because of it.

The same concept can be applied to any field. Are you a doctor? Release a short series of videos teaching people how to overcome a common ailment. Electrician? Produce content that educates people on your recommendations for energy efficient, money saving light fixtures.

Video is a powerful way to establish yourself as an expert, gain authority in your field, and attract the right kind of customers who will appreciate what you do. Need help brainstorming a way to use video in your business? Hit us up and we’d be happy to chat.
